"Well I could spend my life in search of Herbert..."
History
I had a maxim in mind when I wrote this song that I learnt from the records of the band Supergrass: the faster a song is, the less it should mean. It is in no way autobiographical: there wasn’t a girl who rocked my world but broke my heart by vanishing without trace with a guy who looked like Chevy Chase. I just thought that Chase (US comedian from the original lineup of Saturday Night Live) was a good looking son of a gun, and it would make a chord chorus. Thanks to Mark Wilden, incidentally, for top Animal-from-The-Muppets drumming, that was recorded in his shed if I recall correctly. If this song has a serious message, it’s that jealousy can make you a prisoner in your own mind. But that’s a big If…
Lyrics
Once I knew this girl She played her part She rocked my world She broke my heart One day she vanished without trace He took my place He had a face like Chevy Chase ----------------------------------------- Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, you know he looked like Chevy Chase Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, he had a face like Chevy Chase Well I could spend my life in search of her, but I see no disgrace in losing Someone that you love to someone who looks like Chevy Chase ----------------------------------------- And now the nights get long The nights get cold The seconds pass So very slowly Each night waiting by the phone Each night alone oh yeah, but Once I knew this girl She played her part She rocked my world She broke my heart One day she vanished without trace He took my place He had a face like Chevy Chase ----------------------------------------- Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, you know he looked like Chevy Chase Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, he had a face like Chevy Chase Well I could spend my life in search of her, but I see no disgrace in losing Someone that you love to someone who looks like Chevy Chase ----------------------------------------- Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh Coz I don't waste My precious days In jealous and suspicious ways Coz if you do And they get thru And wrap their arms around you Then you will find You're living as a prisoner in Your own mind You should have just forgiven her and Walked on by Instead it's gone and driven her away To someone else's place To someone else's face Like Chevy Chase ----------------------------------------- Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, you know he looked like Chevy Chase Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, he had a face like Chevy Chase Well I could spend my life in search of her, but I see no disgrace in losing Someone that you love to someone who looks like Chevy Chase Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, you know he looked like Chevy Chase Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, yeah well at least she had some taste, a lesser... man might get all envious, but me, I know my place Because I only look like me, and this guy looked like Chevy Chase You know he looked like Chevy Chase -----------------------------------------Credits & Copyright
