  1. So You Want Electricity
"You can have electricity, but you can have nothing else..."

History

Is it better to have a stormy, passionate, exciting relationship that ends in self-destruction, or is it better to have a safe, stable, less passionate one? This was a question I fretted and mulled and contemplated on for years, because it seemed to me that you couldn’t have both. The people who gave you a feeling of electricity when you were around them always seemed to be surrounded by a dark energy that made you both go off the rails, whereas the ones who provided only warmth just didn’t provide enough energy to keep the relationship going. Like the intense but potentially lethal power of a nuclear reactor, versus the dwindling and polluting power of fossil fuels. I since came to the conclusion that what mattered was not physics but chemistry: so long as you have the right chemistry it is possible to get the electricity without the explosions (even if the nature of the electricity mellows over time). But that’s a whole other song…

Lyrics

So you want electricity? You want brilliant light? You want dazzling energy? Beautiful, warm and bright? It seems the essence of simplicity But here's a little advice You can have electricity But it comes at a price   You want more electricity Than you've already got It makes a warm glow energy You want it burning hot It causes too much pollution And one day it will run out There has to be another solution Of that you have no doubt   ----------------------------------------- And yeah that's the riddle When it comes to love It's either something in the middle Or it's more than enough In which case the price is reality Your sanity melts Because you can have electricity But you can have nothing else -----------------------------------------   Because yes, there's another source That'll give you much more It goes much deeper of course But it's unstable to the core And if it gets too close to you It'll sow bad seeds in your soul And make things grow inside of you That you can't control   ----------------------------------------- And yeah that's the riddle When it comes to love It's either something in the middle Or it's more than enough In which case the price is your sanity Your harmony melts You can have electricity But you can have nothing else -----------------------------------------   It will cost you your balance And nothing can heal it A feeling so intense You won't be able to feel it   So you want electricity My foolish little man Beware of dazzling energy That you don't understand
