“It’s not Leonard Cohen, but it’s true”
History
This was the first song I ever wrote that I didn’t feel self-conscious about. Some time in 1999, I think. The first song where I actually felt like I knew what I was doing. My own little take on Dee Doo Doo Doo by The Police or These Words by Natasha Bedingfield, I suppose. Maybe I needed to write a song that absolutely wasn’t trying to be clever in any way, before I could relax and just start writing about what I actually feel.
Lyrics
Grass is green and sky is blue
Grass is green and sky is blue
It’s not Dostoyevsky but it’s true
Grass is green and sky is blue
Grass is green and sky is blue
It’s not Dostoyevsky but it’s true
It’s nothing shocking, nothing new
The world’s not rocking at the news
But it’s true
And
She makes me feel like new
She makes me feel like new
And it may not be Fellini but it’s true
It’s nothing shocking, nothing new
It won’t inspire great reviews
But it’s true
And she
Said I’m in love with you, she
Said I’m in love with you
It’s not Leonard Cohen but it’s true
