So, when it comes to items ‘from the vaults’, I think I’ve shared a number of videos before. But I haven’t really delved into the troves of recordings I’ve made over the years. Something I might be doing a bit more of from now on.
This cover of the Tom Jones classic (featured so elegiacally in that brooding masterpiece Mars Attacks!) was probably recorded either in the late 90s or the early 00s. (I only have the MP3 — I seem to have lost the original master track.) I recorded it all in one large room with whatever instruments I could find lying around.
I have always felt this song to be, like pretty much all of Mr Jones’ work, a bonkers, bonkers song. Narratively, it makes absolutely no sense. And the line “I wanna die” in it feels like one of the most out-of-place lyrics in popular music history.
When we were kids, my brothers and I used to play the game: which song would be least appropriate to have played at your funeral? We went through all the obvious ones: Bullet In The Head, Helter Skelter, Parklife… but I think I ultimately settled on It’s Not Unusual.
