Recommendation: God Is A DJ by Faithless

Not… a particularly recent tune, this one. 1998, in fact.

But for some reason, even though I was pretty obsessed with dance music at the time, Faithless passed me by. I think perhaps because I assumed that you can’t have a great dance track with truly meaningful lyrics. Turns out I was wrong.

I was recently writing a trance track (for business rather than pleasure) and chose this song as a reference, and was just blown away by it. I love how understated it is, weirdly. His delivery. His choice of words.

One day I’ll write my blog post about how dance music always seemed to me like rock music’s more inclusive, more human, more… genuine sibling. But in the meantime, this song perfectly captures why, to so many people, dance culture is something close to a religion. A regular gathering of like-minded people to celebrate being alive.
